The Correspondent
A novel that gives you that warm, heartfelt feeling
Entering Sybil’s world through her letters felt like a privilege. I wasn’t sure how the novel would flow, moving between letters and timelines, but I was struck by how effortlessly the story unfolded.
Sybil wasn’t immediately likable, but I grew deeply fond of her — especially through her letters to Basam. They reminded me of something my grandmother might write: occasionally misguided, but deeply heartfelt. Her correspondence offers such an intimate look into her psyche, revealing not only what she chose to say, but how she arrived there. Though she was a lonely woman, she never felt lonely on the page, writing to anyone her heart desired.
Reading her letters inspired me to do the same. I’ve always been drawn to the long form — to the email over the text message, the editorial feature over the social post, the Substack over Instagram. I admired Sybil’s commitment to the unabridged.
This edition of Library Booth is an ode to Sybil.
The Menu
To Drink: Sherry
Don’t get me wrong — I love sherry. But there’s something wonderfully old-world about it. Sybil felt like she belonged to another era, so it was easy to picture her with a small glass of sherry at her writing desk.
To Eat: Sole Meunière
Maybe it’s because her energy reminded me of Julia Childs a bit — or maybe it’s because I am leaning towards simple, timeless dishes. Perhaps something she would prepare for Theodore!
Something Sweet: Cranachan
I don’t want to spoil too much if you haven’t read this sweet novel, but as Sybil discovers her Scottish roots, I had to throw in a classic dessert chock full of whiskey, raspberries and oatmeal.
The Tablescape
Vintage with a little bit of history. A thrifted tablecloth with a dinner set I imagine Sybil has tucked away somewhere, perfectly arranged yet untouched. And for flowers: an easy glass pedestal jar with delicate, white flowers. Sweet peas for Sybil’s sweet letters.

The Outfit
There was something that gave me Meryl Streep about her — so I was inspired by a structured, almost collegiate look.
Blazer, Shirt, Earrings, Pants, Shoes
The Album
I decided to forgo the playlist on this one. Primarily because I wanted to embrace a bit of analog as I imagine Sybil had some vinyl playing in the background as she was writing at her desk. Blue by Joni Mitchell feels right.
