First off, I’d just like to say THANK YOU for being here. There’s over 200 of you and I can’t believe people are interested in this quirky little book report format I’ve given myself. Ever since I launched Library Booth I’ve had a few friends reach out to ask about what book I’m currently reading and what’s on my to-read list. Well my friends, my to-read list is the longest list known to humankind, but, I’ll give you a snippet of what I’m itching to get to next.
Currently Reading: Martyr by Kaveh Akbar
I can’t of course give a full review as I am only halfway through, but I’m loving it so far. It’s a bit jumpy from chapter-to-chapter, mixing timelines and exploring Cyrus’ dreamlike state, but it’s definitely one of the most unique and interesting books I’ve read this year. I’m enjoying its nontraditional format and Akbar’s style of writing. It’s upbeat and curious even though the subject matter is quite heavy. I’m also a child of Persian-Armenian parents, so I’ve been smiling at all of the references to Tehran and Persian cuisine.
On my TRL: Change, My Husband, and The Creative Act: A Way of Being
I picked up Change by Édouard Louis at my favorite bookstore in Los Angeles, Skylight after quickly scanning through the synopsis. Researching a bit further, I realized this is Louis’ fifth book and was further intrigued by this article from The Guardian.
My Husband seems to have everything I love in a novel: tension, passion, suspense… I can’t wait to read.
The Creative Act: A Way of Being has been on my TRL for a while. I normally reach for fiction, and it’s hard for me to get excited about anything nonfiction, but after starting my newsletter, my creative energy is alive and well, so I brought this one up to the top of my list. I always used to think being creative was something innately a part of who you are, but as I’ve gotten older, I think creativity is something you can learn. It’s a muscle that needs attention from time to time. I’m looking forward to seeing what I can glean from Rubin in this read.
If anyone has read the above - let me know your thoughts in the comments (sans spoilers)!
My Husband is such a fantastic and strange little novel! I loved it. I also really enjoyed The Creative Act—definitely one to savor.
